The coin collection of the Chittagong University Museum constitutes an important resource for reconstructing the political, cultural, and economic history of Bengal. The assemblage comprises approximately one thousand ancient and medieval coins in silver, copper, and brass, in addition to a number of brass seals and commemorative medals. Particularly significant is a small hoard of gold coins, consisting of specimens from the Gupta dynasty, the Islamic period, and one early punch-marked coin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A rare highlight within this hoard is a gold dinar issued in Hijri 77\/AD 696 by the Umayyad Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan, discovered in Hajiganj, Chandpur. This object reflects the wide-ranging circulation of currency and the historical interactions between Bengal and the Islamic world. To facilitate scholarly study, a separate catalogue of coins collected up to 1979 was compiled and published by Professor Dr. Abdul Karim, underscoring the academic value of the museum\u2019s numismatic holdings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
